Why we exist?

The best way to tell you about the company is to explain why we established Give Plants. In 2009 a close family-friend passed away. His wife received many bouquets of flowers which led us to thinking:

  • What a waste; these flowers will all be gone in two weeks
  • The demise of the flowers will mean that she will be confronted with loss again
  • Flowers are short-lived; there will be no enduring memory
  • The flowers consumed all available space in the house

We have always given plants instead of flowers because plants last; they are a living gift

After travelling to the funeral and returning home, I went online to purchase a quality plant to be delivered to our friend.  I discovered that there were no real on-line solutions available to give plants as gifts in New Zealand. I am not saying that you couldn’t purchase plants on-line at all, but we really wanted to send a quality, good-sized, hardy plant in appropriate packaging that didn’t cost the earth.

My wife Kirsty and I talked about the problem. In her pragmatic style, she said I should either do something about it or stop complaining!  So I decided to do something about it.

We’ve set up Give Plants with a simple aim; to provide good quality, well-packaged gift plants on-line. We hope that you love the concept as much as we do and enjoy giving plants. We are proud to be 100% New Zealand owned and operated.

About the Nursery

Our plants are sourced from Robinsons Nursery in Masterton. Robinsons was purchased by the Wilkinson family in 1996. The Robinsons name was retained because it is synonymous with quality plants and has been trading since 1906. Business has changed somewhat in that time, but Robinsons principle of offering high quality plants to the marketplace has not.

Robinsons produces in excess of 300,000 plants per year to a vast client base which spreads from the far north to the bottom of the South Island.

Being based in the Wairarapa allows Robinsons to offer the market extremely well hardened products, which have been through the extremes of cold winters and hot summers. This puts our products in good stead throughout New Zealand. Robinsons has a vast product range, covering everyday plants through an extensive fruit range, onto an exclusive range of brand new products, sourced both within New Zealand and around the world.

Packaging

We have designed our own corrugated cardboard boxes, which come in two sizes. They’re made from 68% recycled paper and the rest is from sustainable trees grown in New Zealand. The boxes are fully recyclable. They’re designed to protect the plant during delivery, by locking the plant in place.  They also look smart when they’re delivered.  The boxes open easily and have slots inside to allow a greeting card to be added without the need to use glue or extra packaging.

Each plant is placed inside a plastic bag that is secured to prevent soil loss and to retain the moisture that the plant needs. Please dispose of these bags carefully in the recycling.

Large size plants are then tucked into handy, drawstring tote bags.  Finally, both large and small plants are secured into their boxes for safe delivery.
