Sometimes referred to as the national flower of New Zealand, Kowhai is the Maori word for ‘yellow’, which refers to its bright yellow flowers that are so popular with many nectar–loving native birds such as Tui and Kereru (wood pigeon). Medicinal use of Kowhai has long been known to Maori. Of the three species of New Zealand Kowhai, Sophora tetraptera is an attractive small tree, with weeping branches and small feathery leaves.
